My Club Story: Zaria

#MyClubStory – Zaria, 13 years old, attending Gary Club for 2 years

When I was 12 years old, I helped a staff member with cadets at my Club, and she told me that I had great leadership skills. She said I should become a Junior Staff member, and she led me to make the positive choice in being a Junior Staff member at JWA. Now, a lot of kids count on me coming to the Club, and the staff really enjoy me coming to help because they appreciate my help.

If it wasn’t for Boys & Girls Club, I would be at home doing nothing. Here, I get to be involved in programs like StartSMART and StaySMART. StartSMART has been my favorite program, because we learn about peer pressure and what to do when possible situations come.

I attend Thea Bowman Leadership Academy, and I have a younger brother, which means more responsibilities. Boys & Girls Club is kind of a getaway for me, and I make a lot of friends here almost everyday. I encourage kids to not be afraid to talk about the stuff that comes in their lives. I feel as if I do make an impact on other kids, because they can come to me when they need someone to talk to.
